The aim of the National Data Basis for Palliative Care is to map and to describe the end of life and the way of dying in the Czech Republic, based on available data sources in the National Health Information System (NHIS). NHIS contains valuable data on hospitalisation history, admission diagnoses, diagnoses leading to patients’ deaths as well as basic socio-demographic characteristics. A systematic analysis of these already existing data can provide useful information on strengths and weaknesses of the Czech healthcare system.

This project aims to provide a complex view of the end-of-life issues and to contribute to the work of healthcare workers who make efforts to alleviate suffering and to improve the quality of life of tens of thousands of patients dying each year.

This robust data basis makes is possible to map the end of life in persons dying in the Czech Republic, and it also serves as a background for the planning of palliative care in the Czech Republic.
